A Sharp Take on the Classic Shaker

How do you take a design as familiar as the Shaker kitchen and give it a contemporary edge?
It’s all in the details.

For this coastal cottage, we began with the classic Shaker ingredients: clean lines, framed doors, and well-balanced proportions. From there, we subtly brought them up to date. The layout is open and spacious, designed for modern living, while the detailing is deliberately restrained. Tamed trims take the place of ornate beadings, allowing the cabinetry to feel crisp and current.
A bright 20mm quartz worktop adds clarity and contrast, complemented by a thoughtful mix of integrated and framed appliances. Internally, glazed drawer boxes replace traditional oak dovetails, a small but meaningful shift that reinforces the contemporary feel without straying too far from tradition.
Nothing drastic. Nothing overdone. Just enough refinement to honour the heritage of the design while quietly moving it forward.

The cabinetry is finished in Mountain Blue, a colour drawn from a linseed oil palette. Achieving a finish like this takes time, meticulous preparation, careful spraying, and patience at every stage. It’s a process we’re rightly proud of, and one that ensures a depth and consistency you simply can’t rush.
To complete the picture, pippy oak was introduced in the island library, shelving and window seat. Honest and full of character, it provides warmth and texture, softening the transition between the crisp quartz surfaces and the gentle lime-rendered walls.

The result is a kitchen that feels calm, considered, and enduring, designed not just for today, but for generations to come.

If you’re considering a bespoke kitchen of your own, this project perfectly illustrates what’s possible when design is led by proportion, material honesty, and craftsmanship rather than trends. Every kitchen we make is tailored to its home and the people who live in it. Designed, built, and finished entirely in-house with an obsessive attention to detail. From the first conversation to the final installation, our focus is on creating kitchens that feel right, work beautifully, and stand the test of time. If that approach resonates with you, we’d love to talk about your project.
